What is it?

An informative, insightful guide to the secret mechanics that power the mysterious music of King Crimson. It is generously illustrated with photographs and musical notation diagrams. This is a scholastic yet accessible work. Andrew Keeling's credentials as composer and academic are impeccable. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and has works published by Faber in the UK and PRB in the USA. His musical compositions have been performed, recorded and broadcast throughout the world.

This guide takes you through all the complexities of the music, stripping away layer after layer to reveal the inner workings of the exquisite machinery of harmony, counterpoint and rhythm that, seemingly so effortlessly, come together to make Starless and Bible Black.

Robert Fripp has described Starless and Bible Black as a transitional album placed, as it is, between the seminal Larks' Tongues in Aspic and Red, the latter regarded by many as the apex of the classic King Crimson period. However, Starless and Bible Black is the first Crimson album which shakes-off the ghosts of the past in terms of the influence of In the Court of the Crimson King. In this way some of the material, recorded 'live', places emphasis on improvisation as an important feature, creating a spell-binding thread which weaves its way throughout culminating in the magnum-opus, Fracture. Musical Guide to Starless and Bible Black exposes some of these musical features, as well as delving into other arcane ingredients which power the album.

"Dr. Keeling continues to inform my understanding of this difficult band." - Robert Fripp
