What is it?

An informative, insightful guide to the secret mechanics that power the mysterious music of King Crimson. It is generously illustrated with photographs and musical notation diagrams. This is a scholastic yet accessible work. Andrew Keeling's credentials as composer and academic are impeccable. He holds a PhD from the University of Manchester and has works published by Faber in the UK and PRB in the USA. His musical compositions have been performed, recorded and broadcast throughout the world.

This guide takes you through all the complexities of the music, stripping away layer after layer to reveal the inner workings of the exquisite machinery of harmony, counterpoint and rhythm that, seemingly so effortlessly, come together to make Islands.

Islands was the outworking of interregnum-period King Crimson (1970), marking a return to 'live' work after a period of eighteen months following the breakup of the first band. The Islands band showcased material from 1970's In the Wake of Poseidon and Lizard, the music, as yet, unheard in a 'live' context. Also developed was new music - The Sailor's Tale, Ladies of the Road, Formentera Lady, The Letters and Islands - which became core repertoire. Islands proved to be another milestone for King Crimson and, at the same time, signified the end of the Robert Fripp/Peter Sinfield writing team.

"Dr. Keeling continues to inform my understanding of what these young men were doing." Robert Fripp.
